Sending Out Our First Family

August 21st, 2008

This Sunday we had many tears as our Leadership Team and I lay hands on one of our members, Josh Scheiderer, to consecrate him for a pastoral ministry. He and his family moved this weekend to Mentor, Ohio, so he may serve as senior pastor of Bible Community Church. Grace Church first met for Sunday worship in their home in the winter of 2007.

We are delighted that God has granted our small church family the privilege of sending out a family into another part of God’s vineyard. Josh, Christy, and their 3 children have taught us so much about loving each other and laughing a lot! We are confident that the Spirit is blessing Bible Community with their presence, and vis-a-vis.

Leadership Team Lays Hands on Josh Scheiderer

I’m often asked why we named our church family Grace Church of Alexandria. We’re simply amazed at the extent of God’s favor, the mountain of gifts, he pours on those who follow Jesus Christ.

We’re acutely aware how desperately rebellious each of us is. Every Lord’s day our corporate worship rehearses that without God’s dramatic intervention, we’d be facing his disfavor, his holy and hot wrath.

But God took the initiative to add us to his family, we who formerly opposed God and tried to sit on the throne of our lives that he deserves. Then he treats us with all the love, favor, and delight that he bestows on his precious Son! His love is so vast that it takes the Spirit’s supernatural work to help us begin grasping the extent of his love (Ephesians 3:16-18).

God’s grace is immeasurable. Grace is God’s love to the unlovely, indeed, the unlovable. We’re called Grace Church to remind us our purpose when we wake up each morning – to praise his glorious grace (Ephesians 1:, 6, 12, 14).

Our Battle Cry Is Love

June 7th, 2008

Grace Church has been seeking the Scriptures together to grasp Christ’s love and image forth his love to our community.

We’ve been talking through Ephesians 4:15 & 16 which tells us to speak truth “in love” and build one another up “in love.” Without love, what good is our orthodoxy, our well-prepared worship services, and our passion to worship God?

Already God has brought many visitors to our Bible study or Sunday worship gatherings. That’s pretty sweet because we haven’t even begun advertising our church body–we’re just meeting together to establish our common philosophy, purpose, and ministries. Many guests are thirsty for genuine relationships in the hubris of the city, so they’re asking to worship with us. If Christ helps us to grasp his boundless love and love others like he did, then our guests will see what God is like and be glad in Him.

Keith Getty reminds us in his hymn, O Church Arise, that only with the church’s battle cry of love will be be able to reach out to those in darkness. Pray that we’ll have the mind of Christ, who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” How have you shown love like Christ’s this month to someone God has put in your path?

Y’all have been asking what church planting looks like on a day-to-day basis. So I’m going to start blogging regularly to clue you in on what our team has been up to. Hopefully you’ll see how a new local church takes shape…how Christ builds his church! Thanks, Judah V for pressing me to blog more!

A Team Effort

First and foremost, church planting is about God using a group of people to display the Gospel through their lives. Christy and I are here to spearhead the effort. Yet we’ve got over a dozen brothers & sisters who have joined us in Alexandria & DC. When Paul established new churches, he was accompanied by a faithful team including Aquilla & Priscilla, Dr.Luke, Titus, Timothy, Epaphroditus, and company.

How To Pray

Pray for our team members to be consistent in living out the Christian life, always repentant before non-Christians, and displaying love like Christ’s. Numerous people in Alexandria have commented how amazed they are by our tight-knit church body and how our team members love serving each other. It’s living like that which will show the world our Christ is alive and at work in our lives.”
